cial welfare forum will be held in city library hall next Tuesday evening tho 29th This is one of the month ly meetings of the forum but will be open to the public this month Round table discussions will be a feature of the program from 730 until 8 three having been arranged one to discuss work for girls another work for boys anl another state legislation when bills dealing with the betterment ofo ial conditions will be discussed I rom 8 until 830 a general busi ness meeting will be held and the speaker of the evening will be San ford Bates penal commissioner of Massa husi tts The popular discus sion of state control for county jails io which Mr Bates figures so promi nently will be his subject The lec ture should be particularly interest ing as it will give the public of the city an opportunity to hear Mr Bates's argument fur state control Three other meetings are planned by the forum members to be held this season the dates being Monday April Monday May 23 and Mon day Juno 13 I Speaker rederick Gillett has suffered an Interruption of his golf ing vacation at Pinehurst through i heavy cold and fever which have confined him to his bed He now considerably improved but Is likely make their home in Waban lint Snell BEORE METHODISTS That Question and ew Changes in This District Booked for Confer ence Here Consideration of the question of the laymen's vote and very few changes among the Methodist ministers of Springfield district are expected to feature the annual meeting of the New England conference to be held at Trinity church beginning the 30th Rev Dr Oscar ord the district superintendent said last night that the pastor whom Bishop Edwin Hughes who will preside will ap point to St Tames Methodist church will probably be from this conference and will not be "transferred from Mr anj Mrs Dwight lint of Phoenix street announce the marriage of their daughter Hazel to James Snell of Los Angeles Cal The marriage took place in Los Angeles where Miss lint has Until the final I appointments are made the first Mon day in April there will be no definite I announcements The district super intendents consult regarding benefi cial changes however and the various churches are allowed to express tneir preferences As Dr ord has not yet completed his round of fourth quarter ly conferences reports have not yet been received from all churches in Members of the Tuesday morning music club will meet this morning in the clubhouse and a program from Russian composers will be rendered Members of the Springfield political class will meet in the after the district this session of the conference and the subject of the I laymen being admitted to meetings on the same basis with the clergymen is also to be considered These mat ters were brought up at the general conference held last May and have to bo ratified by the local conference and the lay conferences If three quarters of the so called con ferences agree the syntem will become effective Church politics occasionally afford complications in the new system where no tjino limit is placed on a pastorate ormerly the Methodists moved every three years regardless of the desires of the pas tors or their parishioners Wesley church entertained tho an nual conference in 1917 beginning Wednesday April 11 Bishop Hughes presided and pledges of support for Wilson and the government were made and much patriotism was shown at the gatherings which start ed less than a week after war was declared Many were in attendance nt the meetings and Bishop James Bashford of China and Bishop Wil liam McDowell of Washington were among the notable guests It is expected that a directory for tho next conference will be issued from Trinity church soon The spring conference of the New England Rotary clubs in Boston
