Welcome to Bleacher Report's live coverage of AEW Dynamite on May 29.

We are fresh off the Double or Nothing pay-per-view and have two new champions looking to kick off their reigns this week.

Not only did Will Ospreay defeat Roderick Strong to win the International Championship, but Mercedes Moné won the TBS title by beating Willow Nightingale.

In addition to their first official show as champions, we also saw Swerve Strickland take on Killswitch, and we got a Casino Gauntlet match to determine who will challenge Swerve for the AEW Title at Forbidden Door.

Let's take a look at everything that happened on AEW Dynamite.

The New TBS Champion

Mercedes kicked off the show with balloons in the ring to celebrate her TBS title victory at Double or Nothing.

She said Willow gave her the fight of her life but is way too nice to have seen Kris Statlander and Stokely Hathaway's betrayal coming. Skye Blue appeared on the big screen and replayed footage from Mercedes being attacked several weeks ago to reveal it was her.

Blue arrived in the ring behind Mercedes and attacked her. She posed with the TBS title before leaving the new champion down in the ring.

Setting up Mercedes' first feud as champion right away was smart. This was a relatively standard promo. There was nothing noteworthy other than Blue's attack, but the good news is Mercedes is clearly over with the crowd.

Killswitch vs. Swerve Strickland

AEW Dynamite Results: Winners, Live Grades, Reaction and Highlights From May 29 (3)

    Swerve Strickland.AEW

The first match of the night saw Swerve Strickland take on Killswitch just three days after defeating Christian Cage to retain the AEW world title.

The powerhouse used his strength to dominate most of the action before the break. He took the champ out of the ring and inflicted all kinds of damage on him using the steel steps and barricade.

As expected, Swerve began to make a comeback when we returned. Not only is Killswitch not booked as a realistic threat to the champion, but he didn't have The Patriarchy at ringside for support.

Prince Nana stopped Killswitch from using a chair. A few minutes later, Strickland defeated him with the House Call. Swerve cut off some of his opponent's hair after the match to get revenge for Killswitch pulling out one of his deadlocks a few weeks ago.

    Result: Strickland defeated Killswitch

    Grade: B-

    Notable Moments and Observations

    • Prince Nana is really pushing his new coffee brand.
    • This bout was a cross-promotion with House of the Dragon. AEW never clarified if the rules were any different.
    • Swerve's pop-up headbutt looked good.
    • The Swerve Stomp from the apron completely missed its mark.
    • It's always fun to see a guy the size of Killswitch hit a standing moonsault.

Jon Moxley vs. Rocky Romero

Big Bill brought out Chris Jericho for the first episode of his talk show called TV Time. He did his new shtick where he pretended everyone loves him during his promo before bringing out Bryan Keith.

The Bounty Hunter ripped into the crowd for not showing Jericho respect. Hook came out but Samoa Joe stopped him from going to the ring. He whispered something in his ear and Hook followed him to the back.

Next up was Moxley taking on Romero in an IWGP Championship Eliminator match. Mox's left arm was heavily wrapped.

Azucar went right after Moxley when he got to the ring and sent him out for a suicide dive. He was focusing on Mox's injured arm immediately.

The IWGP champion did a great job selling by keeping his left arm down and only using his right whenever he had a chance.

Even with Moxley's limited arsenal due to his arm, this ended up being a competitive bout with a quick pace and some great sequences. Moxley scored the win but was favoring his arm quite a bit.

    Result: Moxley defeated Romero

    Grade: B

    Notable Moments and Observations

    • Bill's bad apple joke was met with appropriate crickets from the crowd.
    • It wasn't that long ago that a suicide dive felt like a big move, but now it's so common that we forget how difficult it is to perform. Romero makes it look easy.
    • Moxley'ss one-arm superplex was cool.
    • Romero used a great takedown to take Mox from the top rope to the mat and into an armbar.

Skye Blue vs. Mercedes Moné

Don Callis came out to offer a contract to Orange Cassidy to join the Don Callis Family. OC ended up ripping it in half.

Stoke and Stat came out and distracted OC so Trent Beretta could attack him from behind. Beretta joined the Callis family, which probably should have happened at the PPV but better late than never.

The next match was booked during the how. Moné took on Blue in her first televised AEW match, but it wasn't just any match. Her newly won TBS title was on the line. Julia Hart's BFF tried and failed to get the upper hand right away, but she managed to take control before the break.

After Mercedes won, Stephanie Vaquer, the NJPW Strong women's champion, came out and posed on the stage. It looks like AEW is already setting up for Forbidden Door. The match between Blue and Moné had some good moments but you could also see the lack of chemistry at times.

    Result: Mercedes defeated Blue

    Grade: C+

    Notable Moments and Observations

    • It's weird that Stat and Stoke cared enough to distract OC for Trent. We already know they are heels after turning on Willow, so it felt unnecessary for them to be involved here.
    • It would have been smart to advertiseMoné's first TV match ahead of time. The story didn't allow for it, but that just means it should have been a different story.
    • The way Mercedes sold the kick to the face when she was trapped in the corner was fantastic.

Casino Gauntlet Match

The Elite came out and announced that Adam Copeland is injured and has been stripped of the TNT title. They wanted to award the title to Jack Perry but Christopher Daniels came out and said Tony Khan hired him as an interim EVP.

He said the title had to be earned, but Perry would get his chance in a qualifying match to wrestle for the belt at Forbidden Door. The Acclaimed came out to back up Daniels but there was no fight.

After a break, Jay White and Pac came out to kick off the Casino Gauntlet match to find a No. 1 contender for the AEW title at Forbidden Door. This match had no DQs and could end at any time, even before all the competitors came out.

This kind of bout is designed to be more chaotic as it goes, but the competitors did a good job making sure the action was easy to follow even when there were a lot of people in the ring.

We saw a lot of high-flying spots and fast-paced action, making this the most exciting match of the night. We saw stars from CMLL and NJPW competing alongside the AEW stars to give us a bit of a Forbidden Door preview.

The show went into overtime and ended with Will Ospreay pinning Orange Cassidy to win the title shot. This was a lot of fun and a great way to close the show.

    Result: Will Ospreay won

    Grade: B+

    Notable Moments and Observations

    • Okada was given a Lamborghini by the Bucks. His insurance is going to be a nightmare.
    • Pac's dive over the top rope always looks so effortless. We all joke about gravity forgetting him, but he legitimately seems to float sometimes.
    • Mistico missed the top rope when he went for a springboard arm drag, but the move still looked fine.
    • Rush's jacket looked like a sleeping bag. He and Umino had a Benny Hill moment in the ring.

    Competitors

    1. Jay White
    2. Pac
    3. Mistico
    4. Will Ospreay
    5. Shota Umino
    6. Claudio Castagnoli
    7. Lio Rush
    8. Orange Cassidy
    9. Hechicero

The Final Word

6 of 6

AEW Dynamite Results: Winners, Live Grades, Reaction and Highlights From May 29 (7)

    Dynamite.AEW

This week's Dynamite had a couple of highlights, but as a whole, it felt like a lackluster show after such a great PPV on Sunday.

It's tough to say what it was missing because it had everything you would expect. The new champions made appearances, some future bouts were set up for Forbidden Door, and we got the usual array of matches.

One of the issues was a lack of unpredictability. The main event could have ended multiple ways, but the way every other match and segment ended could be seen coming from a mile away.

The best thing in the show was the Casino Gauntlet match, not only because it had some entertaining moments, but because it included some NJPW and CMLL stars who are over with the AEW crowd.
