Waco-area news briefs: Hewitt chamber to hold free community shred event Saturday (2024)

Community shred event

The Hewitt Chamber of Commerce will hold a free community shred event from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at PointWest Bank, 420 N. Hewitt Drive.

Heart of Texas Shred will take papers dropped off to a secure location for destruction. A notarized certificate of destruction will available upon request to the chamber after the event.

Divorce Care support group

A Divorce Care support group for people seeking help and healing for the hurt of separation and divorce will start from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at First Methodist Waco, 4901 Cobbs Drive, and continue weekly through Nov. 12.

The video-based support group program aims to offer helpful counsel to manage emotional turmoil and practical tools for decision-making.

‘Remember More and Forget Less’

Baylor Lifelong Learning will hold its fall kickoff free coffee event, “Remember More and Forget Less,” from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Aug. 23 at the Lee Lockwood Library and Museum, 2801 W. Waco Drive.

Charles Weaver, Baylor University associate dean for sciences, professor of psychology and neuroscience and master teacher, will present a glimpse into the neuroscience of the brain and memory.

Attendees should park on the 29th Street side of the library for easier access.

Travel training

Waco Transit System will provide a free travel training program from 2 to 3 p.m. Aug. 21, and the third Wednesday of every month. The goal is to empower individuals, especially those with disabilities or seniors, to use public transportation independently. It aims to increase participants’ confidence and mobility in the community.

VA claim clinic for women

A claims clinic for women veterans will run from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Waco VA Regional Office, 1 Veterans Plaza, 701 Clay Ave.

Women veterans will be able to speak one-on-one with expert staff from the Waco VA Regional Office who are ready to assist with specific questions regarding claims for VA benefits and the Veteran Readiness and Employment program.

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are encouraged.

WWII equipment

Bryan Degner, museum outreach coordinator for Fredericksburg’s National Museum of the Pacific War, will present a “Gear Up Before Loading Up” program from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the South Waco Library, 2737 S. 18th St.

Denger will discuss and share WWII gear and equipment issued to soldiers, Marines, and Women Airforce Service Pilots during the war. Participants will be able to see artifacts up close and touch, hold, and put some of them on.

Rotary centennial

The Rotary Club of McGregor will hold its centennial celebration Saturday at The Exchange Event Center, 300 S. Jefferson Ave. in McGregor.

The event will include dinner, an auction and live entertainment.

Small Business Resource Fair

Cen-Tex Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will hold a Small Business Resource Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 24 in the Community Services Center at McLennan Community College.

Participants can learn about free and low-cost resources to help start, grow or expand a business.

It is an open-house-style event with local business support organizations and financial institutions that can assist with funding options, marketing, business planning, social media, business certifications, banking services, financial literacy, credit counseling, accounting, bookkeeping, contracting opportunities and more.

Historical program

“Kate Ross Padgitt: A Woman of Firsts” will be presented from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at West Waco Library, 5301 Bosque Blvd.

Barbara Bridgewater of the Heart of Texas Storytelling Guild will portray Padgitt to share her story. Padgitt was born Jan. 6, 1851, in McLennan County and was the first person to cross the Waco Suspension Bridge. Attendees will learn about her life and legacy as a philanthropist, socialite and businesswoman.

Seating is limited, available on a first-come, first-served ticketed basis.

The program is part of a yearlong series celebrating Waco’s 175th anniversary.

Woodway Farmers Market

The Woodway Farmers Market will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the Carleen Bright Arboretum, 9001 Bosque Blvd.

The market will include an array of vendors, food trucks and live music. Parking is available at the Pavilion at the Arboretum, Woodway City Hall and the Woodway Family Center.
