The AEGD program includes clinical and didactic experiences designed to prepare residents for a successful and fruitful career in General Dentistry. Approximately fifteen percent of the resident’s time is devoted to a comprehensive didactic program designed to build upon and enhance prior knowledge. Advanced instruction, in the form of lectures, seminars, and conferences, is offered in all disciplines of dentistry and dental practice, including restorative dentistry, dental photography, digital dentistry, implant dentistry, fixed and removable prosthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics and endodontics rotations, preventive dentistry, practice management, Laser dentistry, epidemiology, TMJ dysfunction, sedation, pain and anxiety control, geriatric dentistry, medicine, management of medically compromised and developmentally disabled patients, physical assessment, and infection control. Residents participate in literature reviews, case presentations, treatment planning seminars, and the management of the group practice.
The AEGD program provides a solid, comprehensive clinical experience that is centered at the general dentistry clinic at UConn Health. It is within this setting that the resident learns management skills, maintenance of financial and medico-legal documents and records, operatory organization, clinic management, appointment control, and overall patient and practice management. Residents receive advanced training in oral diagnosis, treatment planning, and case management to improve the residents' ability to provide patients with comprehensive care using a multidisciplinary approach. All phases of care are rendered within the clinic, allowing each resident to manage a wide variety of patients and advanced treatment modalities.
AEGD residents may rotate through other selected facilities, Health Center clinics, and community-based settings to enhance the educational and clinical experience.
The AEGD program is responsible for the dental emergency services at UConn Health, and residents run emergency on-call services. Residents learn to manage acute dental problems, interact with all health disciplines in the John Dempsey Hospital, and provide a broad range of urgent dental treatments to a diverse patient population.
The AEGD program occupies a state-of-the-art, fully equipped 32-chair facility within UConn Health and is an integral component of the School of Dental Medicine. A complete staff of dental auxiliaries, clerks, and a practice administrator dedicated to the program. AEGD has a dedicated microscope 610+ for General Dentistry.
The program also has full digital capabilities. We are one of the few programs with a dedicated digital lab for 3D printing and milling crowns, models, surgical guides, occlusal devices, etc. We currently have dedicated to AEGD, 3 Formlabs printers, 2 Sprintray printers, 2 Medit (i500+i700) scanners, 2 itero 5D plus scanners, 3 Dexis scanners, 2 Omnicams, 2 CEREC MCXL mills, 1 VHF E5 milling unit along with corresponding design software.
As an integral part of the Dental School and John Dempsey hospital, there is an abundance of patients and a variety of cases. Specialist support is available every day through the program's own specialists or Dental School's faculty.
The AEGD program faculty includes a full-time program director, a full-time assistant program director, full-time faculty, several part-time attendings, and a large complement of volunteer attendings. The School of Dental Medicine faculty provides specialty support and instruction in every discipline with also Periodontics and Endodontics specialists dedicated to AEGD.
The program offers CE courses through the Connecticut State Dental Association CE Series, Hartford Dental Society and participates in the Yankee Meeting and Greater New York Dental Meeting. Residents are encouraged to participate in all dental meetings via poster case presentations or research.
The program offers an optional PGY2 (second year) for individuals who have successfully completed the PGY1 program and wish to further their training and experience.
The program offers an annual stipend of$58,000.00 for US or Canadian citizens who are graduates of an ADA accredited dental schooland a $48,000 stipend for foreign-trained graduates.

IEF may be substituted with a recommendation letter from the Dean of the school but must include: Class Rank, GPA, and standing (history of disciplinary action).
INDBE/NBDE are not required for applying but are required for matriculation. If you match to our program, you must have successfully completed INDBE/NBDE1 prior to matriculation (May 1, 2025) otherwise, you cannot be matriculated.
You must submit a certified English translation of your Dental Degree through PASS if you graduated from a Non-ADA dental school. Please DO NOT mail or email these supplemental documents; PLEASE ADD THEM to your CV and upload them through your CV.
An official TOEFL score must be submitted to PASS. UConn AEGD Program minimum TOEFL score is 90. We do NOT consider the "my best score". We only consider the actual test score.
